Grammar Nazi

This is an extended version of a post I wrote on Facebook that got tons of hate from people who think grammar only matters in English class.

Sweet Dreams and Clean Sheets

Now, I'm fairly certain I've posted these sentiments before, and probably about the same person, but I just seem to never learn my lesson when it comes to two faced people, and people who flock to me when they need something and run the opposite direction when everything is going well for them.

Student Life

I finished my first final exam today. I couldn't fully bring myself to study for any great length of time for this one. I guess my brain just kept telling me I was prepared enough. There's only 2 questions on which I was unsure of my answers, so I'm fairly confident, only 3 more exams this semester and then I get to go visit the family. Wish me luck

I (heart) MRU Girls

So some of my classmates and I were talking about how awesome it is to go to a school in which roughly 65% of the student body is female. We further discussed that we should make shirts that say I <3 MRU Girls.

This Blog Post Has No Title

As many of you are by now aware, I am a first year university student who is re-entering a scholarly environment for the first time since 2008. For various reasons which for the sake of brevity I will not outline here, but can be found under various posts with the "school" and "Calgary" tags,

Relationship Dynamics or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love TheBomb

Forgive me if this article sounds like a terrible standup routine. It's not meant to be so much humorous, as observational anecdotes/complaints/whatever. Basically, I've been thinking back on my experience with the opposite sex, as well as stories from friends, and observations on how friends of both sexes have acted around potential sexual conquests.

Welcome to Strangeland...

As I sit here attempting to do research for a paper that's due Tuesday morning, I can't help but let my mind wander every now and then. I've been doing some self-analysis to try to figure out why in most of my courses, despite my regular input, my participation marks are fairly low. I've realized I've been self censoring to a degree.

Small Gestures, Big Impact...

Today several things happened to me that made me realize the impact that small things can have on my mood. I won't go too in depth about it, instead I'll focus on two specific events.

My Views on Occupy Wall Street

Now, I'm sure that many will disagree with these views, and that's completely fine. That's what the comment section is for.

Allow me to preface this by saying that I am a first year university student, minoring in Political Science, and only have a low level of understanding of all the nuances of such a situation. That being said, it's likely a higher level of understanding than many OWS supporters and detractors. If you want to lecture me about my views, or flames me for getting something wrong, keep this in mind.

My Clique Should Be Cancelled...

I felt that since I've mostly posted cynical rants, and angry stuff on this page, it was time to thank everyone who's been there for me, and helped me through some tough stuff.

Open Letter To A Friend

I truly thought you were one of my best friends, one of the few people that understood me, at least to some degree. Turns out you had me fooled all along.

Things No One Tells You About University (part2)

I figured it was time to make a few more points about university life. Unfortunately, these ones are a little bit more pessimistic than those mentioned in Part1, but I feel they still hold truth.

Things No One Tells You About University (part 1)

As any one who has read my blog before knows, I began my first year of university this fall. This was after 3 long years out of school, busting my ass in dead end jobs, and in a constant flux of employment/ unemployment due to a terrible job market.

There's a lot to be said about the differences between the real world and the world of academia. Everyone, of course will have differing experiences, but I've attempted to compile what I feel are fairly universal truths about post-secondary education. Based on my experiences so far, and the experiences of others around me.

I've written a few points below, more will follow in the coming days.

I wrote this as my sign of respect for my Great Uncle who recently passed as I will be unable to attend his funeral.

I Hope I Find What I'm Lookin' For, Maybe I Should Drink Just A Little More

It's never easy to face the reality of death. We all know that we will someday die, as will everyone we've ever known and loved. But this knowledge doesn't make it any easier one us when a loved one, whether family member or friend, passes away. It's never a pleasant feeling, regardless of how close you may or may not have been with said loved one.

Hallo-winning

Pictures from Sat-night after the jump

Hatin' Ain't Nothin' But Motivation

It's 11:33PM on October 31st as I begin to write this. Halloween, my favorite time of the year is almost over. I can't say I'm necessarily sad to be leaving the season behind. Being a university freshman on Halloween is the equivalent to bringing a knife to a tank fight. No amount of mental preparation could have gotten me ready for the insane amounts of alcohol I've consumed over the past 3 days.

I Have the Body of John Wilkes Booth

On Tuesday I applied for a travel study program that would earn me 6 credits toward my BA History degree. I won't know for at least a few days whether or not I'll be accepted but I'm keeping my fingers crossed in the mean time. I've never travelled outside of Canada before so I'm waiting for acceptance, then immediately applying for my Passport upon acceptance.

Personal Growth? Or Prevalent Boredom?

I received an email today from one of my professors asking me to volunteer to help with my school's upcoming Open House as a representative of one of the programs. Sort of talk to prospective students about the benefits of this program for first year students. And for the first time I'm genuinely considering doing volunteer work for something other than coaching high school football.

In The Pursuit Of Knowledge! (and drunk stories)

I originally wrote this post back in March but for whatever reason (Good sense mostly) I never posted it. Here it is, not my best work...

Half Naked and Almost Famous

This is an audio recording of me and my roomie Yukon Steve attempting to sing "Drift Away" whilst intoxicated. Steve is playing guitar and we are both singing. Mine is the deeper, more monotone voice.

Now what!?

As I begin writing this, it is 12:45AM and sleep eludes me yet again. It's becoming a common theme ever since I've been in Calgary. I'm not sure if it's the stress of school, the awful bed, or some other factor I've not yet considered. Whatever the case, I can't recall a single night in the month since I've been here in which I was able to convince my body to sleep before 1AM.

Just one of those nights...

Now usually I'm a fairly confident guy, so much so that I've been old I often come across as cocky. However, tonight, by some odd sequence of events combined with the loneliness of being an introvert in a new city, I've begun to realize that my confidence is waning.

Crysis 2

Crysis 2: Bought this on March 22nd and have beat it 3 times since! This game is awesome. Amazing graphics, definitely lives up to its billing of "Best looking console game to date" Crytek hit the nail on the head with this sequel.

Hiatus? I Hate It!

So I haven't posted in over a month, I've been having a hard time getting inspired because I was sick for about 2 and a half weeks and then was in a bad place for a while. Had an awesome day today and yesterday though so I'm going to write some stuff, see how it goes, and post it.

Thoughts On Maturity

Today I realized just how complicated it can be to have a platonic relationship with someone of the opposite sex. I'm not talking about awkward crushes making things uncomfortable for a while. I'm talking about the maturity aspect of it. This may be a one sided thing, but as a young adult male, when I'm with other young adult males, I'm immature, rude, and offensive. You know, the way guys are.

Thoughts About Death

Due to a recent announcement that a family member of mine has been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer, I have been thinking a lot about the inevitability of death. Not in a "oh no I just realized I'm a mortal!" sort of way, but rather in a "why do we have so many different ideas of what happens when our life ends?" way. I personally am not religious, I do not believe in a god, or a higher power, but rather in things that can be proven....

The Hidden Reality Part 3 of 12

The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos

Chapter 2: This chapter explains the basics of Einstein's theory of relativity, and uses his model of the universe to explain why there may be parallel worlds. For those unfamiliar with the theory of relativity, it was proposed by Einstein to explain the pull of gravity.

Less Science More BASS

Another music review? This one will be a bit shorter and more to the point.

The Hidden Reality Part 2 of 12

Chapter 1: This is mainly an introductory chapter to the idea of multiple realities (or multiple universes). The main thing I took away was that I do not even have the slightest idea of the scope of this theory. The author explains the reasoning behind the multiverse theory thusly:

The Hidden Reality Part 1 of 12

Today I started reading Brian Greene's The Hidden Reality, a book about physics written so as to have a much broader appeal than, say, a textbook on the subject. I have decided to share my thoughts and a few points of what I have learned from the book every time I finish a chapter. There are 11 chapters and as this is an introduction, this will be a 12 part piece, all of which will be tagged "hidden reality".

Less Ranting More BASS

I've decided to review some of the Independent musicians of which I am a fan. Today I am going to review rapper Craig Smith's newest release titled The Mace Windu Project (available for free at iamcraigsmith.com )

For those not aware, Mace Windu is the name of Samuel L. Jackson's character in the newer (read:worse)  Star Wars trilogy. I first heard of Craig Smith when he was featured on Tech N9ne's Collabos: Sickology 101 on the song In The Air. I found his simple but intelligent sounding rap technique pretty interesting so I looked him up and have been following him on Twitter for over a year and downloading all of his music. I would definitely consider myself a fan.

Rant About People

This is going to be an extremely cynical post, that's what happens when you decide to make a blog at 4am. I'm beginning to lose all hope for humankind. I blame a few different things, the most prevalent of which in all our lives is big media.

Rant on Ignorance (expanded)

New thoughts:
Slippery Slope arguments (if we let gay people marry pretty soon someone will marry a goat etc.)
-The ignorant people who use this sort of logic need to realize that slippery slopes go both ways. (Zach Weiner points this out in a wonderfully hilarious way in this comic: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=1748#comic )
